Councillor biographies

Steven Waring is in business as a landscape gardener, with his firm being well known around the Maidstone area. He first became a Parish Councillor in May 2000 and, unsurprisingly, advises the Council on matters relating to the Memorial Playing Field and the other open spaces in the village.

Wendy Gatward has lived in Chart Sutton since 2017. She works at the Lord Raglan and has done for over 25 years. When not at work Wendy enjoys cooking, gardening and walking her dog.

John Killick moved to Chart Sutton from New Eltham, South East London in February 2023. Now retired from a long career in mechanical engineering, followed by running his own garden maintenance business for the last 15 years, he is keen to be active in the community and to see Chart Sutton continue to be a great place to live. He is enjoying his garden and looking forward to exploring the local countryside.

Robert Sagrott moved into the parish from Staplehurst in 2000. Now retired from a career in banking (commercial rather than personal),  he is keen to put something back into the community and take a more pro active role in parish matters. Robert is a volunteer in the village community shop and his main interests are walking, cricket and hockey.

Valerie Underdown has lived in the village since 1998 and joined the Council in June 2007. She is retired from KCC where she was a Telecoms Manager for 25 years, having previously worked for the GPO/BT.  She is a Volunteer Support Worker for the local charity, Buttercups and also serves on the Village Hall Social Amenities Committee.

Paul Ward has lived in Chart Sutton since 1993.  He farms organic apples and pears in Chart Sutton, Cranbrook, Goudhurst and Marden. Paul would like to help promote a greater sense of community, particularly in his locality. He enjoys walking, cycling, playing squash and real ale.
